Begin with how the chair will be used
Think about how many hours the chair is used, whether the room feels warm or cool and how likely the cover is to meet food, drinks, pets or frequent cleaning.
The most practical cover is one the household can care for confidently. A beautiful finish may not suit daily life if every small mark becomes a worry.
What fabric feels like
Fabric often feels warm, soft and familiar. Weaves, chenilles and boucles can look very different, and texture can affect how easily crumbs, hair or dust lift away.
Ask whether the exact fabric has a care code or manufacturer treatment. Do not assume every fabric can be cleaned with the same household product.
What leather feels like
Leather can feel cooler at first and warmer after sitting. It is often easy to wipe, but different finishes react differently to sunlight, heat and cleaning products.
Look at the seat, arms and head area on the exact chair. Natural creasing can be normal; cuts, peeling or deep wear need a separate conversation.
View colour and texture in real light
Screens and showroom lighting can change colour. Use photographs to shortlist, then view the chair in person or ask for a close image taken in daylight.
If matching furniture matters, bring a cushion, sample or clear photograph from the room. Compare beside the chair rather than relying on a colour name.
Ask for the exact care instructions
Use only the method recommended for that cover. General leather cream, stain remover or steam cleaning can damage a finish that needs specialist care.
