The short answer

Petite, standard and large describe chair proportions within a range. They do not describe quality or guarantee a good fit. Check seat height, depth and width against the person, then confirm head, back and arm support while the exact chair moves through its full action.

Who this guide helps

This guide is for anyone unsure which chair size to try, especially families comparing models for a shorter, taller or broader relative.

Use the size label to make a shortlist

A petite chair is usually lower and shallower. A large chair is usually taller, wider and deeper. Standard sits between them, but dimensions differ between ranges.

Treat the label as a quick route to two or three chairs. The person still needs to sit in each one and compare the published measurements.

Check the seat from the floor upwards

With the chair upright, feet should rest on the floor and the person should sit back without the seat edge pressing behind the knees.

There should be comfortable space beside the hips without leaving the person unsupported. The arms should allow relaxed shoulders and feel easy to reach.

  • Feet supported when upright
  • A small gap behind the knees
  • Hips comfortable without sliding sideways
  • Arms reachable without lifting the shoulders

Check the back and head support

Sit fully back and notice whether the lower back, shoulders and head feel supported. A plush chair can still be the wrong shape for the person using it.

Run the recline and rise actions. Support can change as the chair moves, so do not judge the fit from the upright position alone.

Make sure the chair fits the home

Overall width and depth affect the room, while packaged or removable sections affect delivery. Ask for both the chair dimensions and the delivery arrangement.

Measure doors, halls, turns, steps and the final action space. A smaller chair still needs room for its footrest, reclining back and rise movement.

Your showroom checklist

  • Record the person’s height and approximate weight.
  • Check feet, knees, hips, arms, shoulders and head in order.
  • Try the same range in two sizes where possible.
  • Run the full recline and rise action.
  • Confirm room, doorway and delivery dimensions.
